ABC Orders Single Parents Starring Leighton Meester and Taran Killam

Before you could even properly mourn the loss of Designated Survivor and Quantico, ABC announced that Leighton Meester and Taran Killam will lead the cast of its newest comedy pickup, the series Single Parents. Much like the title suggests, the series, which was created by JJ Philbin and Liz Meriwether (New Girl), follows a group of single parents who turn to one another for support as they raise their kids.

The series officially kicks off when the 30-something Will (Killam) realizes he’s been so focused on his dang kid that he no longer knows who he is as a man! Poor guy. That’s rough. When the other single parents see just how bad ol’ Will is doing outside the ream of parenting, they naturally band together to force him out into the even more terrifying world of dating. This will definitely end well!

Joining Killam and Meester, who plays single mom Angie, the series also stars Brad Garrett, Kimrie Lewis, Jake Choi, Marlow Barkley, Tyler Wladis, Devin Trey Campbell, Grace Hazelett and Sadie Hazelett.

Single Parents joins fellow new series A Million Little Things, Take Two, The Rookie and a Goldbergs spin-off on ABC’s 2018-2019 schedule.

Leighton Meester Cast In ‘Single Parents’ ABC Pilot

SNL alum Taran Killam, Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) and Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond) have closed deals for lead roles in ABC comedy pilot Single Parents, from New Girl creator/executive producer Liz Meriwether and former writer J.J. Philbin and 20th Century Fox TV.

Written by Philbin based on a story by her and Meriwether, and directed by Jason Winer, Single Parents revolves around a group of dysfunctional single parents who lean on one another as they raise their kids, look for love and ultimately realize survival is only possible with the help of one another.

Killam will play Will Cooper, a single dad whose daughter is his whole world — but, because of his devotion to her, he’s forgotten how to be a man. Meester will portray Angie, mom to an overly attached son whom she is doing everything she can to protect for as long as possible. She’s scrappy, strong and has had to hustle as a single mom for years to make ends meet. Garrett plays Douglas, a rich, retired, country club member who’s “not-not racist.” He has an old-school mentality on parenting and gender roles and easily throws money at whatever problems he faces, no matter how small.

Meriwether, Philbin, Katherine Pope and Winer executive produce the pilot, which is being cast by former Fox casting executive Seth Yanklewitz.

During is tenure on SNL, Killam was known for such impersonations as Donald Trump, Andy Cohen and Brad Pitt. He recently wrote, directed and co-starred opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in the feature comedy comedy Killing Gunther.

Meester played Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl. Her most recent TV credits include Making History and The Last Man on Earth.

Garrett, known for his Emmy-winning longtime role as Robert on Everybody Loves Raymond, most recently appeared on Bull and This Is Us and recurred on Fargo. This marks his return to ABC, where he starred in the comedy series How to Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life).

Fox Cancels Making History

As you probably know by now…

Zorn has been defeated by an adversary more formidable than Zulchazor.

And time has run out for Making History.

Fox has canceled freshman comedies Son of Zorn and Making History, EW has confirmed.

Both shows, which were executive-produced by The Lego Movie gurus Phil Lord and Chris Miller, were ambitious comedies. Son of Zorn, created by Wilfred‘s Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne, featured the cartoon warrior Zorn (voiced by Jason Sudeikis) trying to adjust to life in live-action Orange County, where his son (Johnny Pemberton) and ex-wife (Cheryl Hines) lived.

Making History, created by Julius “Goldie” Sharpe (The Grinder), followed the time-traveling adventures of a college facilities manager (Adam Pally), his girlfriend/Paul Revere’s daughter (Leighton Meester), and a history professor (Yassir Lester).

Neither show made a dent in the Nielsens: Son of Zorn averaged 3.4 million viewers per episode and a 1.5 in the 18-to-49 demo while Making History averaged just 1.8 million viewers with a .8 in the demo.

The networks debuted three time-travel shows in the 2016-17 season, and all three met the same fate. NBC cancelled Timeless and ABC jettisoned Time After Time.

In addition to Son of Zorn and Making History, Lord and Miller are also the executive producers of another Fox comedy, The Last Man on Earth, which on Wednesday night received some good news in the form of a renewal for a fourth season.
